A novel reactor configuration fed with biogas produced by an anaerobic reactor was investigated aiming a better understanding on the role of the biogas constituents as electron donor for denitrification. The Radial Anaerobic/Aerobic Immobilized Biomass (RAAIB) reactor was designed to promote the removal of organic matter and nitrogen from wastewater. The bench-scale RAAIB reactor was divided into five concentric chambers with the second and fourth chambers filled with polyurethane foam matrices. Promising results were obtained in respect to organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiencies. The total Kjeldahl nitrogen removal presented an efficiency of 92% after the biogas supply (38th operation week), with a mean effluent concentration of 3.2 mg/L. Organic matter measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed at efficiency of 90% in the same period, with effluent COD of 44 ± 11 mg/L. The mean value of effluent nitrate concentration was 1.9 mg/L. Based on the results obtained, the combined system anaerobic / aerobic / anoxic with fixed film can be considered a viable alternative for wastewater treatment. |
